How Do Service Numbers Work?

We’ve written a lot about service numbers recently. We’ve also explained the differences between types of service numbers and highlighted the unique features that Belfabriek offers to service number owners for free. Now it’s time to explain the processes behind service numbers.
How Does a Service Number Work?
0800, 0900, and 088 numbers are virtual phone numbers. This means these numbers forward the caller to an existing (local or international) number. In practice, this means a caller dials the service number, and Belfabriek then calls your number. This happens so quickly that the caller doesn’t notice. A service number is essentially an enhanced *21-call forwarding service.
When you want to register a service number, there’s no need to install a new phone line. You’ll receive incoming calls on the number of your choice, whether it’s a landline or mobile. You can change this so-called destination number whenever you want and even set up multiple destination numbers, for example, when you have a menu with call forwarding to different departments.
The IVR Makes It Possible
When someone calls your service number, they first reach Belfabriek’s IVR platform. IVR stands for Interactive Voice Response and is a computer system that recognizes dial tones and human speech. Since an IVR can also play audio files and forward calls, it enables the creation of intelligent call routing systems. The result? The caller is connected to the right colleague as quickly as possible.
How the IVR handles an incoming call depends on various factors: the day of the week, the time, the caller’s location, and so on. Since Belfabriek’s IVR is highly configurable, you have full control over your phone number.
What Does This Mean for Number Owners?
By making smart use of the versatility of our IVR system, we can offer our customers a variety of extra services.
In addition to call routing options, the ability to listen to voicemail via email, and a comprehensive statistics dashboard, Belfabriek’s IVR offers another important advantage to number owners: the ability to change the destination number. For example, forward calls to a call center in another time zone or to a mobile phone when the office is closed. You can easily change the destination numbers by phone or online, and they become active immediately.
