Many doctors and pharmacists offer a repeat prescription line. These lines reduce the workload of consultations and regular phone services, thereby improving the telephone accessibility of medical practices and pharmacies.

Patients call a repeat prescription line and are warmly welcomed by the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. The caller is then asked to state their name, date of birth, the names and dosages of the medications, and optionally the pharmacy.

The IVR records the caller’s responses and emails them to the doctor. At set times during the day, an assistant listens to the recordings, approves the requests, and forwards them to the pharmacy, which prepares the medications. The patient can then pick up the medications, often within one working day.

For the pharmacy, this distribution of repeat prescriptions has the advantage of shorter waiting times in the pharmacy.

An additional benefit for the patient is that the automated repeat prescription line operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
